David Williams is the original pioneer—the first non-Indian to learn the complete Ashtanga Yoga system from Sri K. Pattabhi Jois. His journey, chronicled in his memoir "My Search for Yoga," reads like an adventure story: a young American seeker traveling through India in the early 1970s, ultimately discovering a practice that would define his life and help shape the course of yoga in the West. David began practicing yoga in 1971 and received his teacher training at Dr. Swami Gitananda's Ananda Ashram in Pondicherry. In 1972, he met K.P. Manju, Pattabhi Jois's son, and witnessed a demonstration that captivated him. By 1973, David had made his way to Mysore to study directly with Guruji at his home—one of only a handful of students at the time. David's most consequential act may have been sponsoring Pattabhi Jois and his son Manju to come to America for the first time in 1975. This historic visit fundamentally changed the course of yoga in America, planting seeds that would blossom into a worldwide movement. Without David's initiative, the spread of Ashtanga in the West might have looked entirely different. Now residing in Maui, Hawaii, David has maintained a daily practice without interruption for over 50 years. His philosophy centers on sustainability: "If it hurts, you're doing it wrong. Yoga is the practice of liberation, not self-torture." He emphasizes that practice should feel good and support longevity rather than create injury. David Williams represents the very beginning of Ashtanga's journey to the West—a living connection to a time when this practice was virtually unknown outside of India, and a reminder that one dedicated seeker can change the course of a tradition.
